In 875 AD, Abbas Ibn Firnas leapt from a height in Andalusia wearing wings of wood, silk and feathers. By most accounts the flight went well. The landing, less so. He had forgotten a tail. More than a thousand years later, we cross continents in machines of steel and software, yet the impulse is unchanged. The desire to leave the ground has always been with us.
