R34 Highway Reconstruction in Moldova: Road Base Construction Begins Simultaneously on Six Sections Construction of the road base has officially started on six sections of the 42-kilometre R34 highway reconstruction project between the cities of Cahul and Cantemir in southern Moldova. Following the successful completion of trial sections for the two pavement structure designs presented in our previous updates, full-scale production is now underway on six sections with a total length of 3 km. The works include: Milling of the existing pavement; Removal of the existing road base; Cement stabilization of the in-situ soil; Construction of crushed stone drainage layers; Placement of a cement-treated crushed aggregate base (35%) incorporating reclaimed milled asphalt material (65%). At our production base in Zîrnești, where both the soil mixing plant and concrete batching plant have been installed, deliveries of aggregates continue. Materials are being transported by barge from Romania via the Giurgiulești Port and by rail from Ukraine via Cahul railway station. On the trial section, we have already placed the 6 cm asphalt binder course. This week, samples will be tested by our laboratory at the Zîrnești production base in the presence of the Employer's representative. Upon successful verification, full-scale asphalt paving operations will commence. Currently, 70 units of construction equipment and 230 specialists are working on the R34 project. PROJECT INFORMATION In August this year, Automagistral-Pivden and the National Road Administration of Moldova signed a contract for the reconstruction of a 42-kilometre section of the R34 highway leading to the Port of Giurgiulești. The project section stretches between the cities of Cahul and Cantemir, running parallel to the Romanian border. Today, many parts of the R34 suffer not only from severe pavement deterioration but also from damage to the underlying road structure. Road markings and safety barriers are largely absent, making travel both uncomfortable and unsafe. The reconstruction of the R34 is essential not only for the development of local communities but also for improving transport connectivity between Moldova and the European Union. The project includes: 📍 Road widening and complete pavement reconstruction, including intersections, agricultural access roads, and residential driveways; 📍 Construction of six bridges; 📍 Installation of sidewalks, street lighting, safety barriers, drainage systems, and utility infrastructure. Project highlights: ✅ More than 500,000 cubic metres of earthworks; ✅ Over 375,000 m² of cold in-place recycling; ✅ More than 100,000 tonnes of asphalt mixtures to be used for the new pavement.
