This building used the Pacific Ocean to fill what was once the world's largest indoor swimming pool. When Adolph Sutro opened the Sutro Baths in 1896, the complex housed seven pools beneath three acres of glass. But the real feat wasn't the scale. It was the engineering. Instead of relying on electric pumps, the building was designed to harness the tide itself. The natural rise and fall of the Pacific moved nearly 2 million gallons of seawater through the pools each hour, using gravity as the primary driving force. A turbine pump only kicked in as backup when low tide couldn't do the work alone. More than a century later, engineers are still applying the same logic: designing with natural systems rather than engineering around them. The most enduring designs aren't always the most complex ones. Often they're the ones that let physics do the heavy lifting.
