On the night of the 26-27th August 1918, during operations near Fargny Wood, Corporal Bernard Gordon performed the actions for which he would receive the Victoria Cross. Gordon led his section through heavy shellfire and then single-handedly attacked an enemy machine gun post and captured several trenches including 2 officers and 61 enemy troops, as well as six machine guns. Gordon was wounded a few days later fighting near Mont St Quentin, and the award of the Victoria Cross was announced while he was in hospital.
