This week ACU has awarded not one but two Honorary Doctorates, recognising a stalwart of the diplomatic service to the Holy See, and a pioneering Sister of Mercy who helped prepare for Australia's first national Catholic university. Archbishop Charles Balvo, who has been the pope's ambassador to Australia since 2022, accepted a Doctor of the University at our Brisbane Campus yesterday. The honorary degree recognises Archbishop Balvo's service to Australia and the Holy See, days before he retires from the mission and returns home to New York. “I feel very honoured to receive the degree, just before I leave Australia to take up a new chapter in my life,” the Papal Nuncio to Australia said. We were also proud to confer a Doctor of the University on Sr Patricia Nolan RSM OAM, whose leadership and foresight helped shape the Sisters of Mercy's teacher training institution McAuley College into ACU's Brisbane Campus. A former school teacher, Sr Patricia offered some words of wisdom to today's educators. “I would not dare to offer them advice, except to say: Take care. Do not burn yourselves out. Never lose courage. Your country needs you." Sr Patricia said.
