What happens when households replace gas with electricity, and what does that mean for customers and the network? That’s what AusNet’s ElectriFAIRcation trial in Morwell set out to understand. The trial supported around 50 households experiencing hardship and vulnerability to electrify parts of their homes, including insulation, heating, hot water and cooking. But one lesson stood out early: the project succeeded because of trust, not technology. By partnering with trusted local organisations like Gippsland Climate Change Network Inc. and working through the Morwell Neighbourhood House, engagement was local, genuine and human, not transactional. Local delivery mattered too. Using local trades and suppliers helped manage the complexity of electrification and build confidence in the process. As results from the trial continue to be analysed, ElectriFAIRcation is reinforcing an important lesson for future projects: start with the community, listen first and work locally.
