Sustainability in the automotive industry — navigating complexity from the inside. thyssenkrupp Presta AG operates in a sector navigating significant economic headwinds — and yet the company is actively building and embedding sustainability management structures rather than deferring them. Recently, I had the privilege of taking my students from the Sustainable Business Development programme to ThyssenKrupp Presta in Eschen for an on-site company visit. For my students, this was an opportunity to move beyond frameworks and engage with the complexity of real-world implementation — how sustainability is embedded in decision-making, where reporting meets accountability, and what genuine stakeholder orientation looks like inside an industrial organisation. A few reflections I take away: → Sustainability leadership in challenging environments requires both conviction at the top and operational anchoring throughout the organisation. → Exposing future leaders to this complexity early is one of the most important things we can do in sustainability education. My sincere thanks to Dr. Andrea Loacker, Swantje Dobringer, and Tobias Danner for the depth of insight they shared with us, to Lucero Starlinger for the seamless organisation of the visit, and to Gerhard Kolb for a truly fascinating tour of the production facilities.
