ANNOUNCEMENT | The 2027 Walters Prize finalists are here, spotlighting a new generation of artists. 🖼️ Held every three years, the Walters Prize is Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading contemporary art award. Selected by an independent jury, the Prize celebrates four artists for their contributions over the last three years. The nominated artists are: ✨ Edith Amituanai for 𝘝𝘢𝘪𝘮𝘰𝘦, 2024, first exhibited in ‘Edith Amituanai and Sione Tuívailala Monū: Toloa Tales’ at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna Waiwhetū, 2024. ✨ Richard Frater for 𝘕𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘺’𝘴 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯, 2024, first exhibited at Klosterruine Berlin, 2024 and Lett Thomas, Auckland, 2025. ✨ Ammon Ngakuru for 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘚𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴, 2025, commissioned by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, 2025. ✨ Sorawit Songsataya for 𝘍𝘪𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘭, 2024, Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, 2024. The finalists will present new work or their nominated work in a public exhibition at the Gallery, scheduled to open in March 2027. The winner of the Walters Prize will be announced in mid-2027, selected by an international judge. Thank you to this year’s jury: Tyson Campbell, Abby Cunnane, Becky Hemus, and Hanahiva Rose.
