As Artificial Intelligence becomes embedded across public services, healthcare, finance, energy, defence and critical infrastructure, the ability to identify who is acting, what is acting and under which authority becomes a strategic requirement. Identity is no longer limited to people. Tomorrow's digital ecosystems will include autonomous AI agents, robots, connected devices, digital twins and distributed services interacting continuously across borders. Without trusted identity, these interactions cannot be securely governed. Trusted Digital Identity therefore becomes the operational trust layer of Europe's digital future. Its purpose extends far beyond authentication. It enables verified identities, trusted credentials, delegated authority, secure interactions, accountability and cross-border interoperability. A resilient European identity architecture should guarantee: • Secure identification of citizens, organisations, AI systems and connected devices. • Verifiable credentials that can be trusted across Member States. • Privacy-preserving identity management with user control over personal data. • Cryptographically secure authentication and authorisation. • End-to-end traceability of digital interactions. • Seamless interoperability between public administrations, industry and critical infrastructure operators. The European Digital Identity Wallet represents an important milestone towards this vision. However, the next evolution extends beyond digital identity for citizens. Future sovereign infrastructures will require trusted identities for every operational entity participating in AI-enabled ecosystems. Humans. Machines. Algorithms. Autonomous agents. Digital twins. Every operational decision will depend upon knowing not only what information is exchanged, but who generated it, who authorised it and whether its origin can be independently verified. Trust will increasingly become an architectural property rather than an administrative procedure. Digital identity will therefore evolve from a citizen service into a strategic infrastructure underpinning Europe's operational sovereignty. Without trusted identity, there is no trusted AI. Without trusted AI, there is no resilient digital Europe. In the age of intelligent systems, identity is no longer simply about proving who you are. It is about proving that every interaction across Europe's digital ecosystem can be trusted.
