As the effectiveness of existing antibiotics continues to decline, there is an urgent need for innovative therapeutic strategies to combat emerging and drug-resistant infections. ย At A*STAR Infectious Diseases Labs (A*STAR IDL), Dr Ning Li, ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ป๐๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ด๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ฟ and Head of the ๐๐ป๐๐ถ๐บ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐บ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฏ, is leading research at the intersection of ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ๐บ๐ถ๐๐๐ฟ๐ and ๐ถ๐ป๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐ to develop ๐ป๐ฒ๐ ๐-๐ด๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ against fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens. ย ๐ฌ Taking a highly interdisciplinary approach, Dr Li's team transforms innovative molecular designs into potential therapeutics. Along the way, the team made an unexpected discovery: a compound originally designed as an antibacterial agent failed to inhibit bacterial growth, yet demonstrated highly selective activity against a specific ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ช๐ฅ๐ขย fungal species, ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ณ๐๐ป๐ด๐ฎ๐น ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ผ๐ด๐ฒ๐ป ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ด๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ด๐น๐ผ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป ๐ฑ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ผ ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฑ๐ฟ๐๐ด ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐น๐ถ๐บ๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ผ๐ฝ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐. ย โจ What began as an unforeseen result has since evolved into a promising avenue for ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ณ๐๐ป๐ด๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ฒ๐, highlighting how breakthrough innovations can emerge from unexpected findings.
