๐ŸŒAs global warming expands mosquito habitats, #Chikungunya is re-emerging as a serious public health threat. ๐ŸฆŸNew research led by Dr Fong Siew Wai and Prof Lisa F.P. Ng reveals that ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ปย - a peptide in #Aedes mosquito saliva - not only aids the spread of chikungunya virus but also suppresses the host's immune responses. ๐Ÿ’ฅKey findings: Sialokinin binds to human neurokinin receptors, reducing immune cell activation. In ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ฐ infection models, this reduced joint swelling and inflammation. In patients, higher levels of antibodies against sialokinin were linked to more severe disease and higher viral loads. ย  ๐Ÿ”ฌ This means mosquito saliva isnโ€™t just a passive carrier of the virusโ€”it ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜† ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐˜‚๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐˜†โ€™๐˜€ ๐—ถ๐—บ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ฒ, shaping the course of infection. ๐Ÿ’ก These findings not only deepen our understanding of host-vector-pathogen interactions but also ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜ ๐—ฝ๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜๐—ต efforts by identifying a new ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜.
