๐As global warming expands mosquito habitats, #Chikungunya is re-emerging as a serious public health threat. ๐ฆNew research led by Dr Fong Siew Wai and Prof Lisa F.P. Ng reveals that ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐น๐ผ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ถ๐ปย - a peptide in #Aedes mosquito saliva - not only aids the spread of chikungunya virus but also suppresses the host's immune responses. ๐ฅKey findings: Sialokinin binds to human neurokinin receptors, reducing immune cell activation. In ๐ช๐ฏ ๐ท๐ช๐ท๐ฐ infection models, this reduced joint swelling and inflammation. In patients, higher levels of antibodies against sialokinin were linked to more severe disease and higher viral loads. ย ๐ฌ This means mosquito saliva isnโt just a passive carrier of the virusโit ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ๐ฝ๐๐น๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฏ๐ผ๐ฑ๐โ๐ ๐ถ๐บ๐บ๐๐ป๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฝ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฒ, shaping the course of infection. ๐ก These findings not only deepen our understanding of host-vector-pathogen interactions but also ๐๐๐ฝ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฝ๐๐ฏ๐น๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ต efforts by identifying a new ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ด๐ฒ๐.
