For in-house counsel working across borders, business etiquette is more than courtesy; it shapes trust, negotiations, and long-term outcomes. That was the central message of a recent ACC panel featuring in-house counsel from Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, and the UAE, moderated by the ACC Southern California (Association of Corporate Counsel). Panelists Theresa N. Chikwendu, Lucy Otolo, Nega Mirete, Felista Mubyeyi Kimanuka, and Rima Hadid explored how cultural awareness and professional courtesy have become essential skills for lawyers in a global economy and agreed that while customs vary, the foundations of successful cross-cultural relationships remain universal: curiosity, respect, adaptability, and a willingness to learn the unwritten rules.
