Gov. Jerry Brown's new CalMatters op-ed raises a question worth sitting with: what does school accountability actually mean if it's not applied evenly? #AspireGoldenStatePrep enrolls students who start sixth grade several years behind grade level and sends them out with one of Oakland's higher graduation rates. Oakland Unified and Alameda County's school boards' actions could still lead to its closure, based on a single assessment result. Tomorrow, Aspire GSP's appeal goes before the CA State Board of Education. It's a decision about one school, but the reasoning behind it is a template. If a school can be shut down over one cherry-picked number, despite real results for kids, then that same playbook applies to any school in the state, regardless of how well it's serving students.
