🌸 📣 🔔 PINK ALERT 🔔 🌸 📣, I haven’t posted in a while… it’s been one of the trickiest years in business — yet the most creative development I’ve ever experienced 💕 Today, I’ve launched a new show… the Tyne for Business Podcast with Ashleigh King It’s not about your typical inspiring thought leaders, it’s shining a spotlight on independent business in Newcastle, the places and products we love, and the community we’ve built around them. The first episode features Brinkburn St Brewery, Bar & Kitchen This 200-year-old building holds so much more than a microbrewery. It started life as the quality assurance facility for Maling Pottery, and in 1832 became the first school for workers’ children in Newcastle - built by Huguenot immigrants who believed education should be for everyone, not just the privileged. Hidden at the back is the original pottery tunnel, and inside it - a WWII air raid shelter. Lee, who runs the Brinkburn, showed us a gas mask that belonged to his mother. She was placed in that shelter as a one-year-old baby during a seven-hour bombing raid on Byker. His grandfather’s medals hang nearby — he served with the Northumbrian Hussars, was at Dunkirk, and spent four to five years as a prisoner of war 🎗️ And then there’s the community — the way Brinkburn stayed open through COVID to keep some sense of normality alive for the city, the interiors entirely secondhand and upcycled, the tiny four-fermenter brewery that somehow produces 120,000 pints a year, sold almost entirely at the bar 🍺 This is what Tyne for Business is all about — the stories behind the pint, the building, the business. Stories of Courage, Creativity and Commerce. 🎙️ Watch/listen to Episode 1 now on YouTube or your favourite podcast channel.
