The term dark factory is becoming one of the most discussed concepts in automotive manufacturing. But there is still little agreement on what it actually means. At Ascentt, we believe the distinction is important. A factory with AI pilots, dashboards, and automated workflows isn't necessarily autonomous. A factory that can detect, diagnose, and respond to operational disruptions with minimal human intervention is moving closer to that reality. That's the difference between digitisation and autonomy. As European OEMs and suppliers navigate cost pressures, increasing complexity, and global competition, the question is no longer whether AI should be deployed. It's whether organisations are building the foundations required to operationalise autonomy at scale. That's one of the key discussions we'll be bringing to our The Lights-Out Decade workshop at #ReAutoEU.
