Welcome back to our Energy Science vs. Fiction series! As you know, the world of oil & gas extraction and hydrogen sulfide scavenging is full of challenges. Here's your next Science vs. Fiction challenge: A true H2S scavenger will either change (increase) the oxidation state of the sulphur atom from negative 2, or form a strong covalent carbon sulphur bond with the sulphur atom, making it essentially impossible for H2S to be regenerated under conditions encountered in oil & gas production. H2S sequestrants on the other hand, such as caustic soda or heavy amines, only trap the H2S as a bisulphide or sulphide salt, making no change to the oxidation state of the sulphur atom and allowing for the regeneration of H2S under conditions such as pH change or elevated temperatures.
