Are the old ways the best in medical education? In this Nature Medicine perspective, we advocate for traditional methods of assessment to ensure that clinicians develop the necessary independent knowledge and reasoning to take full advantage of emerging technology to care for their patients in the future. Viva voce, long-form writing, and objective structured clinical examinations (OCSEs) can all be used to train students to exercise independent judgement and to recall basic and clinical scientific information when required. Clinicians with these basic skills will be best equipped to improve their effectiveness and efficiency with generative AI and other digital health tools.
