Clinicians often spend valuable time navigating complex documentation and unclear payer criteria — time that could be spent caring for patients. We recently partnered with a large healthcare enterprise to transform their Prior Authorization (PA) workflow using AI — while keeping clinicians firmly in control. 🚧 The Challenge Clinicians faced a process that was: • Manual and time-consuming • Opaque with little visibility into payer decision logic • Unable to handle complex context or requests efficiently 🤖 The Approach We designed a human-in-the-loop AI system built on Google Cloud that combines predictive modeling, explainability, and generative AI. Key capabilities included: ✨ Automated extraction of clinical data from EHR systems 📊 Machine learning models predicting approval probability based on historical payer behavior 🧠 Generative AI translating complex model insights into clear, clinician-friendly explanations 💬 Natural language interaction powered by conversational AI All model outputs remain reviewable and overrideable by clinicians, ensuring safety, trust, and compliance. 📉 The Impact • ⚡ 30% reduction in prior authorization effort • 🔎 Greater transparency into approval criteria • 🧑‍⚕️ Less administrative burden for clinicians • 🔐 Secure, compliant AI adoption in a healthcare environment The solution leverages Vertex AI, Generative AI Studio, and Dialogflow CX, creating a scalable foundation for future AI-driven healthcare workflows. 💡 The real takeaway: AI works best in healthcare when it augments clinicians — not replaces them.
