“Not enough.” We heard this from a cyclist in Nancy when talking about the city’s bike lanes. Not enough because of missing connections in the cycling network, but also because of everyday interactions with drivers. During our (Me+Laura Sobral) time in the city, we saw how behaviour on the street can strongly shape the cycling experience — and also influence the data we collect. This raised a question: How open source devices [senseBox:bike] can help map drivers’ behaviour in urban spaces? After an 8-week campaign collecting data on urban cycling conditions, we processed the data together with local datasets and discussed the first results this week with local organizations, cyclists, and mobility enthusiasts during the Fête du Vélo and at the Living Lab Lorraine. Even with a limited dataset, some patterns started to emerge: - 63% of overtaking less than 1 meter events happened on streets with no cycling infrastructure or only painted lanes. - Cyclists also mapped around 65 km of corridors with less than one meter of available space next to parked cars — meaning they are often riding in areas where they could be hit by opening car doors. Based on this data, we are now organizing communication materials to support local organizations in advocating for better cycling infrastructure. Because, as the cyclist said: “not enough.” Happy World Bicycle Day! 🚲
