A Night to Remember: When My Chinese Teacher Surprised Me in Yantai The best moments in life often come unannounced. I had just arrived in China, my heart full of excitement and nostalgia. One of the first things I did was message my former Chinese teacher, Ms. Ellen, from Sichuan University—but with a twist. Using my new Chinese number, I texted her like a complete stranger. At first, she had no idea who I was. Then—recognition dawned. Her reply shifted from polite confusion to sheer disbelief, then erupted into excitement. "Sun Yi Shan?! Is that really YOU?" 🤩 I laughed, imagining her reaction. But what happened next left me speechless. Just a few days later, she surprised me by coming to Yantai—just to see me. We arranged to meet at Haichang Fisherman’s Wharf (渔人码头) under the glow of evening lights. At 9:30 PM, as the cool sea breeze brushed past, I spotted her waving at me with a bright smile. "Sun Yi Shan, let’s meet at this place!" she said, showing me a photo she had just taken of the wharf. Her thoughtfulness didn’t end there. She handed me an adorable panda souvenir 🐼—a little piece of Chengdu—and then, with the warmth only a teacher can give, invited me to visit her home next time. This wasn’t just a reunion; it was a testament to a bond that time and distance couldn’t weaken. We’ve stayed in touch since 2021, and through every step of my journey, she’s been there—cheering me on, offering advice, and now, traveling across cities just to share a moment together.
