Yesterday we premiered our documentary Casas Muertas in the festival Hot Docs in Toronto. A film by Rosana Matecky. Associate Producer: Rainbow Lobster. The Venezuelan exodus is a collective escape—more than eight million have fled in recent years. But what about those who stayed behind? Casas Muertas follows the lives of those trapped inside a collapsing country. Isabel was forced out of her flooded village when water reached her knees. Jesús watches over an empty house in Caracas, abandoned by a fleeing family. Darwin prepares to cross the border, left alone in a country that devours its youth. Juan Pablo was murdered during the 2017 protests. His parents remain, fighting for justice while slowly selling off their belongings to survive. This film is an elegy of a nation told through its homes—broken, abandoned, resisting collapse. A portrait of Venezuela through its silent architecture and the people still holding on. “Every venezuelan carries a dead house with them.”
