This phrase, which in its time was a declaration of freedom and defiance, resonates more powerfully than ever in contemporary Mexico. In recent years, Mexico has reopened itself to the contribution of globally-minded people. Figures like the Mexican-Spaniard Fidalgo, the Mexican-Colombian Quiñones, and the Mexican-Americans (one born in Alaska) on the Mexican national team have broadened our understanding of what it means to be Mexican. In lucha libre, "El Grande Americano" —whose performer is German— has challenged traditional notions of identity. The best in the world, says this new vision, should be Mexican.
