🏃♂️ Exercise is good for us. Yet for people with type 1 diabetes (T1D), it can also be a source of concern. One of their challenges is how to keep blood sugar levels stable during a workout. Experience shows that many people with T1D are so worried about the impact of a blood sugar drop – a so-called hypo – that they don’t exercise at all. This may increase their risk of developing cardiovascular disease and other diabetes-related health complications. A new study has investigated the potential to improve blood sugar control by consuming a natural milk sugar before exercise. To our knowledge, it’s the first study to compare the effect of milk sugars in this context - and the results look promising. Our nutrition specialists provided the test products for the trial, which was conducted at the Clinic for Athletes with T1D at Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus in collaboration with University of Birmingham and Massey University - Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa. Funding from Novo Nordisk Foundation.
