A few weeks ago, following the World Water Tech Innovation Summit in London, we brought together a group of utility and delivery leaders at our 80 Fenchurch Street office, alongside Arcadis experts from the UK and the US, to continue the conversation. Not on AI as a standalone topic, but on what it actually takes to build future-ready water companies in practice. Across the discussion, a few things came through clearly: -Utilities have strong ambitions alongside key sector drivers, including regulatory requirements, customer trust, and competing investment priorities. -AI has real potential, particularly in efficiency, productivity, and compliance, but only if the data is trusted. -And perhaps most critically, the barrier isn’t technology. It’s culture, decision-making, and how change is adopted at the enterprise level. With leaders from Severn Trent Water, Anglian Water, Wessex Water, and Southern Water, alongside partners including Kier, Morgan Sindall, and Costain, the discussion was candid, practical, and grounded in delivery realities, enriched by perspectives from Arcadis teams working across water utilities globally. The takeaway? Future-ready isn’t about tools. It’s about the quality of judgement they enable, the ability to turn that judgement into confident decisions under pressure, and the ability to execute them consistently across the organization.
