150 years ago this month, Edward Bouchet made history as the first Black man to earn a doctorate in physics in the United States, specializing in experimental physics at Yale. After facing numerous racial barriers that limited his academic career, Bouchet dedicated his life to teaching physics and fighting for improved science education.
