A study published in Physical Review Letters details the most precise measurements to date of five relatively rare heavy cosmic-ray elements: phosphorus, chlorine, argon, potassium, and calcium. By analyzing 1 million events collected over more than 13 years, the authors found that the 20 cosmic-ray elements measured by AMS can be grouped into four distinct classes — results that cannot be explained by existing cosmic ray models, the authors say.
