✨ Mānawatia a Matariki from Āpōpō ✨ Over Matariki we are invited to pause, remember, give thanks and look ahead. For those working in infrastructure asset management, this feels especially relevant. Our work asks us to understand what we have inherited, care for what communities rely on today, and make thoughtful decisions that will shape the wellbeing of generations to come. We invite you to read this poignant reflection from Ruth Jost, which draws on the significance of Matariki, te ao Māori and Whetu Thompson’s Congress Competition poster, Mau Tonu Ngā Whetū: The Stars Are Still There. Whetu’s poster, which won the Best Emerging Member Poster category at the 2026 Āpōpō Congress Poster Competition, and now lives in the Āpōpō Guide, uses the image of a waka hourua as a powerful reminder that good asset management is never about one factor alone. Like voyaging by the stars, it depends on knowledge, observation, judgement, relationships, direction and collective responsibility. Ruth’s words invite us to lift our gaze beyond the immediate horizon. They remind us that asset managers are not simply managing assets; we are acting as stewards of systems that connect people, place, purpose and time. At Matariki, the stars help us look back, be present and look forward. In asset management, our reference points may include data, standards, investment frameworks and technical knowledge. But we also need wisdom, context and a commitment to kaitiakitanga, so that the decisions we make today leave the systems we care for stronger for those who come after us. That is also the spirit of Āpōpō: bringing people together to share knowledge, strengthen practice and navigate the future of infrastructure asset management in Aotearoa New Zealand. We encourage you to read Ruth’s article, reflect on Whetu’s poster, and consider the stars that guide your own work as an asset manager over this period. Mau tonu ngā whetū - the stars are still there. Take care this long weekend. #Matariki #Āpōpō #AssetManagement #InfrastructureAssetManagement #Kaitiakitanga
