We talk about it constantly, but what really is ISO 50001? Serra Alban š broke it down for us: Most people think it's about monitoring electricity bills but it goes beyond that. ISO 50001 is the international standard for Energy Management Systems, and it's really about building a systematic architecture around how your organization uses and improves energy. The clearest way to frame it: ā ISO 14001 is the generalist, your total environmental footprint: waste, water, pollution. ā ISO 50001 is the specialist, it asks one question: exactly how efficient is every machine, process, and building you operate? And the engine behind it is the PDCA cycle: Plan, Do, Check, Act. Which means this isn't a one-time audit you pass and forget. It's continuous improvement, by design.
