For EU policymakers, the focus is shifting. The challenge now is how to secure access to AI without limiting innovation, balancing calls for greater technological sovereignty with the need for cross-border cooperation. The stakes are high, as access to these technologies is increasingly tied to economic security and competitiveness.   As Alec Verhaeren, who advises across tech, trade and logistics on the geopolitical dimensions of EU trade policy, writes, a recent U.S. decision requiring Anthropic to restrict access to its latest AI models highlights a growing risk for Europe: reliance on a small number of global providers.   The geopolitics of artificial intelligence is no longer theoretical.   But AI does not follow traditional industrial logic. Its value chain spans data, talent and compute across borders, making purely domestic approaches hard to scale.   In a more fragmented world, resilience will depend on internal strength and trusted partnerships.
