Every successful system creates the illusion that it never needed help. And perhaps that is its greatest paradox. Once institutions become stable, markets mature, and capabilities take root, we begin to speak as though they emerged naturally or could have matured faster. We remain myopic even in hindsight and forget the years of uncertainty, public investment, experimentation, and risk that made them possible. Maybe sustainability isn’t about removing support. Maybe it’s about knowing when support has done its job! That idea sits at the heart of some combined thoughts from Dr. Tigistu Ashengo and I. We wrote this not to invite debate or to defend viewpoints but purely to invite thoughtful reflections from each of you on how we can continue to collaborate and support each other to support the system to achieve its intended outcomes.
