Andrea Mantegna — The Trinity with the Virgin, Saint John and Two Donors (c. 1465–1474) Reconstructing a Lost Renaissance Masterpiece ATLAS OF LOST ART AETERNUM Art Historical Andrea Mantegna stands among the greatest innovators of the Italian Renaissance. His mastery of perspective, classical architecture, and monumental human form transformed the visual language of fifteenth-century painting and influenced generations of artists across Europe. One of the most significant losses associated with his artistic legacy is The Trinity with the Virgin, Saint John and Two Donors, created for the private chapel of the Gonzaga family in the Castello di San Giorgio, Mantua. The fresco combined profound religious devotion with Mantegna's remarkable command of illusionistic architecture, sculptural anatomy, and mathematical perspective. It represented the ideals of Renaissance Humanism while serving as one of the most important devotional images commissioned by the Gonzaga court. During the bombing of Mantua on the night of 8–9 September 1944, the chapel suffered devastating damage and the fresco was lost, together with an irreplaceable part of Europe's artistic heritage. The reconstruction presented here has been developed from surviving historical photographs, documentary sources, architectural studies, and a comparative analysis of Mantegna's authenticated works. Its purpose is not to replace the original masterpiece, but to offer a historically grounded visual interpretation of one of the Renaissance's greatest losses. Alongside the reconstructed work, the project also recreates its original architectural setting within the Chapel of San Giorgio, allowing viewers to experience the painting as it was conceived more than five centuries ago. Recovering the historical dialogue between artwork and architecture is one of the guiding principles of the Atlas of Lost Art. Because preserving memory is also a way of preserving history. — Atlas of Lost Art AETERNUM Art Historical A. P. G. · Nely Gutierrez · Laura G.
