🌊 Islands of Conviviality · 1–9 September 2026 · Split, Brač, Hvar, Vis An island pedagogy across the southern Dalmatian archipelago coinciding with the centenary of the birth of Ivan Illich. In early autumn 2026, a small research procession departs from Split and crosses the seas between Brač, Hvar, and Vis to think and act with Medical Nemesis, Deschooling Society, and Tools for Conviviality, on and between the islands that shaped Illich’s life and thinking. Image: Young Ivan Illich on a donkey on the island of Brač. The Ilich (Ilić) family is one of the island's oldest, its windmills and a 16th-century complex of houses can still be found around Sutivan. A month after his birth in Vienna on 4 September 1926, Ivan Illich was put on a train, then on a ship, and brought to this island. In September, we return. With keynote lecture by Hito Steyerl, book launches with Jürgen Renn (MPI Geoanthropology) and John Kim (Mississippi River Open School), and contributions from Valeria Graziano, Armina Pilav, Srećko Horvat, !Mediengruppe Bitnik, Arka Kinari, @ermenautica, Cassie Thornton, and many other people and themes floating, sinking and arising as part of Sea Symposia held in collaboration with Ermeneutica.
