Do you follow the #CityOfPeekskill official page on #Facebook ? If so, you may have noticed that public comments are no longer allowed under the posts they make to their page. One may only “like” or “share” posts. Such an arrangement only serves to limit public discourse. Not all of us can attend the Common Council meetings and wait until the very end so we can speak for three minutes and then be cut off. I think we all know the impact of emailed comments (0%) and the level of response we receive to emailed enquiries (for me, it is two responses since moving here from Mount Vernon in 2011). I manage Peekskill Newswire on Facebook. I cannot promise change, or to fix the potholes that banjax the axle of your car, but you can feel free to comment on any of our posts (including those reposted from the City’s page). We also accept and encourage your sending us event flyers and any information of local interest you would like to see amplified. Some of us still believe in the protections offered to public comment by the First Amendment and that social media sites are, in this digital age, a genuine and worthwhile extension of the public square.
