During the first months of the #covid19pandemic, crisis management and fast decision-making were key as hospitals attempted to ensure optimal care. To gain insight into #decisionmaking processes regarding infrastructural adaptations, Research[x]Designers Pleuntje Jellema & Margo Annemans conducted interviews with representatives of technical services, facilities and planning departments in several general hospitals in Flanders. Whereas the initial approach turned out to be predominantly top-down, insights gained into the type of cross-departmental collaboration that was necessary and possible during the covid-19 crisis may also have value under more regular circumstances to swivel between top-down requirements and #design contexts ‘on the ground’.
