π€ Is Consultation Enough, or Should Communities Be Co-Creators? One of the biggest misconceptions in community development is this: Asking for input equals participation. It does not. Too often, communities are invited to meetings, asked to complete surveys, or encouraged to share their opinions. They invest their time, their stories, and their ideas, only to discover that the decisions have already been made. That is consultation. Consultation can be valuable. It gathers perspectives and provides information. But on its own, it does not shift power or create ownership. An Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach calls us to go further. π± Consultation gathers opinions. π€ Co-creation shares responsibility. ποΈ Ownership grows when people help shape decisions from the very beginning. Communities are not empty vessels waiting for experts to arrive. They already possess: π§ Knowledge built through lived experience π Gifts and talents that often go unrecognised π οΈ Practical skills developed over generations π€ Relationships that hold neighbourhoods together π‘ Local leadership that emerges through trust, not titles When these assets are ignored, participation becomes symbolic. When they are recognised and mobilised, communities become co-designers, co-producers, and co-owners of change. The role of practitioners, governments, NGOs, and funders is not to write the community's story for them. It is to create the conditions where people can write their own. The strongest projects are not those that receive the most applause at launch. They are the ones that continue long after the consultants have left because local people believe, "This is ours." π The shift from consultation to co-creation is more than a methodology. It is a shift from voice to agency, from participation to ownership, and from delivery to shared responsibility. βDiscussion: Have you ever been "consulted" only to discover that your ideas never influenced the final outcome? What would genuine co-creation have looked like? β ABCD for Impact #AssetBasedCommunityDevelopment #ABCD #CoCreation #CommunityPower #ParticipatoryDevelopment #CommunityLeadership #SystemsChange #LocalOwnership #DevelopmentThinking
