Ebola is a stark reminder that health security depends on strong health systems. This week, together with Paschal Donohoe, we briefed our Board of Executive Directors on the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The World Bank Group stands with governments across Africa to support emergency response, risk reduction, and preparedness. More than a decade of investment has helped build DRC’s disease surveillance network, and that foundation is now being put to work. The Bunia lab is testing samples. Nearly 47,000 health workers have been trained. Monitoring capacity has been strengthened nationwide. This is a lesser-known strain with no available therapeutics, which makes the response even more urgent. We are working with governments and partners to treat those affected, reduce transmission, and continue strengthening health systems across Africa. Responding to today’s outbreak and building resilience for tomorrow are not separate goals. They are the same mission.
