I was back on BBC Politics Live last week to react to Andy Burnham’s big speech and the challenge of delivering on his council house pledge. As I said, I’d love to be Burnham right now. To borrow from Mario Cuomo: right now, Burnham is all poetry, no prose. Every new leader starts with a vision. That’s the easy part. (Unless, I’ll concede, you’re Starmer). But as any leader knows, whether you’re running a country or a business, the hard part is turning ambition into decisions, navigating trade offs and delivering results. The real test for Burnham isn’t this speech, or even the one he’ll give on the steps of No 10. It's the first time has to disappoint one part of his coalition to pursue his vision. That’s the moment we’ll find out what kind of Prime Minister he’ll be.
