Tucked in the southern portion of Burgundy’s “golden hills”, just down river from the town of Beaune, lies a truly wonderous place. The twin sisters of Puligny and Chassagne Montrachet have produced soul-stirring, life changing white wine since before the time of the Cistercian monks. These magnificent hills are one of the precious few places on earth where soil, climate, aspect, and grape have truly come into unspeakable harmony. The ancestral home of Chardonnay, this place transcends the, “I don’t like Chardonnay” crowd. Even they would be left breathless, mouth agape, at the sheer passion this wine evokes. So often, wines of this caliber are only reserved for those willing to pay a car payment for a single bottle. Not so today. The 2014 Olivier Daubresse 1er Cru is now available for the insanely low price of $100. Practically a steal when you consider this wine seems to have the blessing of Dionysus himself. An emotional, tense, and viscous wine, shimmering like a diamond in the glass. Notes of lemon curd, dried pineapple and mango, toasted hazelnut, almond skin, brioche, vanilla bean, clotted cream, beurre blanc, and pie crust hang in the air. The palate is so intensely complex as to evoke each flavor individually, in an integrated symphony I guarantee you wont soon forget.
