Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the 2024 UK Student Finance Summit, hosted by CAREER26. It was an incredibly enriching experience, packed with valuable insights into the finance industry and practical advice for career development. The event began with an inspiring keynote from Sophie Warrick, Head of Equity Research at J.P. Morgan, who shared her career journey and emphasised key skills for success in finance, such as work ethic, motivation, enthusiasm, and strong interpersonal skills. Sophie also highlighted the importance of integrity, humility, and staying calm under pressure—qualities essential for navigating the fast-paced world of finance. One of the earlier components of the summit was the stock pitch competition, where my team consisting of Josh Lai-kit and I had the opportunity to create a detailed presentation on LAM Research, a leading company in the semiconductor industry. The process of researching the company, formulating our investment thesis, and preparing our presentation was an invaluable learning experience. It allowed me to refine my analytical skills and practice communicating complex financial concepts clearly and effectively. Listening to the finalists’ stock pitches during the event was a fantastic learning experience as well. The depth of analysis and professionalism in their presentations gave me key takeaways on how to approach investment analysis and pitch delivery in the future. The summit also deepened my understanding of the diverse roles within finance. I learned about the distinct functions of private equity, venture capital, and asset management, and how each contributes to business growth, economic development, and innovation. The discussions made it clear how these sectors work together to shape the broader financial ecosystem. A significant takeaway from the summit was the increasing emphasis on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) factors in investment decision-making. I gained insight into how sustainability and social responsibility are becoming integral to modern finance strategies and how these factors are reshaping investment practices. Additionally, the summit provided valuable networking opportunities, allowing me to connect with finance professionals and peers. These connections broadened my perspective on different career paths within finance and provided practical advice for navigating the industry. A big thank you to CAREER26 and Zhan(Angela) Shi for organising such a well-rounded and insightful event. I look forward to attending more events like this in the future! #StudentFinanceSummit #Career26 #Finance #PrivateEquity #VentureCapital #ESG #WealthManagement #AssetManagement #StockPitch #Networking
