"The wildlife and its habitat cannot speak, so we must and we will". - Theodore Roosevelt In some much-needed good news, the Numbat, one of Australia's most distinctive native mammals, has just been downlisted from Endangered to Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, the first improvement in its status since the 1970s. Proof that patient, science-led stewardship works. There is more to do, but today, a genuine win. Credit to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, whose work establishing secure populations inside feral predator-free fenced areas, restoring habitat, and controlling threats has helped make this possible.
