Professor of Environmental Meteorology at the University of Freiburg

I advertise a new and well-funded PhD position (3.5 years) in Forest Microclimatology in my group and with Florian Schnabel and Markus Weiler as part of the Excellence Cluster Future Forests at The University of Freiburg. In this PhD project, we will hindcast below-canopy microclimates in the Black Forest Region (Germany) and derive quantitative, microclimate data for different forest stands. We will work with data from a novel adaptive sensor network of 200 sites, using machine learning-based approaches for data processing, network optimization, and to quantify and explain the degree of microclimatic buffering. As part of an entire new cohort of PhD students - this is an exciting opportunity to link microclimate work to broader forest ecology and management with integration into the Excellence Cluster Future Forests. This is providing outstanding international visibility and a well-funded PhD package supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation. Are you interested or do you know potential candidates? You will find the formal requirements and information here - apply by January 12, 2026 or contact me directly: https://lnkd.in/eJejSsw6
