Every leadership team is hearing the same pitch right now: AI can flatten structures, cut management layers, save millions. The direction of travel looks obvious. Except the numbers tell a different story. Manager engagement has dropped faster than any other group's, according to Gallup's latest workplace data. And separate research from MIT found the vast majority of AI pilots inside organisations have produced no measurable return at all. In his latest piece for HR Press, Amrit argues the two problems are connected. AI can't do the part of management that actually drives performance: reading a team, rebuilding trust, making the calls no dataset can make. Cut the manager and you haven't removed a cost. You've removed the thing that was making the investment work. The real question isn't how many managers AI lets you remove. It's what your managers could achieve if AI gave them their time back.
