Yesterday in London against the backdrop of Tower Bridge, Ancestry launched a campaign called the Missing Pages. This important project is the culmination of a year-long partnership with Historic England with the shared aim to address the gender imbalance in how women’s achievements have been recognised in written history. Ancestry research reveals that men receive four times as many mentions as women in history textbooks used in UK schools, and this trend continues in written history in general where women are often framed in relation to male historical figures rather than on their own merit. With the expertise of respected historian Dr Amy Boyington, Ancestry has developed The Parity Principle; a test for scholars, academics and culture-shapers to ensure women’s lived experiences and contributions show up in how history is written and shared. Ancestry and Historic England have uncovered 25 stories of remarkable women who have gone largely unrecognised and uncelebrated. Their stories appeared in a custom-made newspaper handed out to media and passers-by and will remain on Ancestry to remember and inspire people to discover the women in their family’s history who played a part in shaping the world we live in today.
