Anthropic has suspended access to two of its AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, after receiving a US government export control directive citing national security authorities. The order, received at 5:21 p.m. ET on June 12, required the company to disable access for all foreign nationals, including those inside the United States and foreign-national Anthropic employees, while access to its other models remains unaffected. The government’s concern centres on a reported method of bypassing, or jailbreaking, Fable 5. Anthropic said it reviewed the technique and found it exposed “a small number of previously known, minor vulnerabilities,” adding that other publicly available models, including OpenAI’s GPT-5.5, could identify the same vulnerabilities without requiring a jailbreak. The company said it had not received evidence of any jailbreak that resulted in harm. While complying with the directive, Anthropic pushed back on the decision, saying: “We disagree that the finding of a narrow potential jailbreak should be cause for recalling a commercial model deployed to hundreds of millions of people.” The company said it believes the government’s action is based on a misunderstanding and is working to restore access to both models.
