For those of you visiting the Vatican, keep an eye out for the remarkable sculpture Angels Unawares by Timothy Schmalz, commissioned by Pope Francis and installed in St. Peter’s Square in November 2019. Many visitors never notice that Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus are hidden among the crowded boat of migrants and refugees. In fact, they are not placed at the front where we might expect to find them. Instead, they are immersed within the crowd itself. This was intentional. The sculpture invites the viewer to search for the Holy Family among the displaced, the forgotten, and the stranger. It asks a profound question: If Mary, Joseph, and Jesus appeared before us today as refugees, would we recognize them? https://lnkd.in/dc32Z_a4
