Post-bariatric hypoglycemia (PBH) is thought to be caused by changes in hormonal and glycemic patterns, including an excessive glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) response, leading to repeated episodes of low blood sugar (also known as hypoglycemia) that impair quality of life.   Repeated episodes of hypoglycemia can lead to hypoglycemia unawareness, a condition where the body does not produce the typical early warning signs of hypoglycemia.   There is currently no approved treatment for PBH, underscoring the importance of research to better understand and ultimately treat this condition.
