To many people, fireworks mean celebration. For some Veterans living with PTSD, they can mean something very different. The loud explosions, sudden noises, and crowded gatherings that often accompany holiday celebrations can trigger the brain's survival response, making what feels festive to some feel overwhelming to others. Here, Dr. Charles Smith, DO, addictionologist at our Recovery First Treatment Center in Hollywood, FL, explains why fireworks can be so triggering for Veterans with PTSD and why a little understanding can go a long way. As we celebrate this holiday, let's also remember that kindness sometimes looks like checking in, offering support, or simply being mindful of what others may be experiencing. 💙
