Do you know how to correctly treat a burn? With the cold weather here, many of us are reaching for warm food or drink, heaters, hot water bottles and heat packs. But all of these can cause burns. It’s National Burn Awareness Month and we’re teaming up with The Royal Children's Hospital, Country Fire Authority (CFA), Fire Rescue Victoria and Kidsafe Victoria to share prevention and treatment tips. Some simple ways you can prevent burns? 🍲 Ensure pots have lids on and handles are turned away from children. 👶 Always supervise children around open heat. 🍵 Be mindful of coffee, tea or anything within reaching distance children. 🕯️ Check for fire hazards around your home. Don’t leave matches and lighters around children and keep an eye on lit candles. And if you or someone you’re with has a burn injury, remember the treatment steps below: 🚿 Hold the burnt area under cool running water for 20 minutes. 👚 Remove clothing or jewellery that is not stuck to the burn. 🚫 Do not apply ice or food products, such as butter. For minor burns, the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (VVED) is available 24/7 via video link: www.vved.org.au You can also get care and medical advice by attending an Urgent Care Clinic near you: https://lnkd.in/gkkC49nE Your GP or local pharmacist can also help. For serious burns or emergencies, always call Triple Zero (000).
