At the recently concluded 2026 Beijing Auto Show, one trend became increasingly clear: electrochromic (EC) smart dimming is evolving from a niche innovation into an essential part of the intelligent cabin experience. The journey began in 2005, when the Ferrari Superamerica introduced the world’s first electrochromic roof. For the first time, drivers could actively adjust roof transparency, transforming natural light from something simply blocked into something that could be intelligently managed. In 2009, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner brought this experience to aviation, allowing passengers to adjust window tint while maintaining an open view of the sky. More than a new feature, it reflected a growing expectation for personalized comfort and uninterrupted connection with the outside world. As automotive design evolved from conventional sunroofs to expansive panoramic glass roofs, cabins became brighter, more open, and more connected to their surroundings. At the same time, larger glass surfaces created new expectations around glare control, thermal comfort, and visual well-being. In 2021, large-area curved EC glass entered mass production, with the Zeekr 001 becoming one of the first production vehicles to bring this experience to consumers. From 2022 to 2024, as new energy vehicles announced as the “third living spaces,” panoramic glass roofs became a defining element of modern cabin design. EC smart dimming began appearing in more production models, including the NIO ET5T, NIO EC6, and Avatr 12, giving occupants greater control over light, heat, and comfort. By 2025, the focus expanded beyond overhead light. Side windows emerged as the next step, bringing privacy, glare management, and personalized comfort to every passenger. Today, with multi-zone dimming entering vehicles such as the NIO ET7 and the NIO ES8, EC technology is evolving from a single feature into a complete, intelligent cabin light environment. From sunroofs to full-cabin light management, the evolution of EC dimming has always been driven by a simple human need: to stay connected to natural light—while shaping it around comfort, privacy, and everyday life. #Ambilight #Electrochromic #SmartDimming #Boeing787 #Innovation
