The Future of Sustainable Cities: The Role of Underground Space At Changing Cities VII in Spetses, Greece (15–19 June 2026), Antonia Cornaro, Expert on Underground Space at Amberg Engineering and Chair of ITACUS - the ITA Committee on Underground Space, co-presented the paper: “Underground Space – The Creation of Self-Reliant Cities: From 2D Surface Sprawl to 3D Volumetric Planning” co-authored with Chrysothemis Paraskevopoulou and Asimina Paraskevopoulou. The paper explores how integrating underground space into urban planning can support more resilient, efficient, and sustainable cities by moving towards 3D volumetric planning approaches. This is an important message to professional bodies dealing with urban planning like Changing Cities VI International Conference and ISOCARP - International Society of City and Regional Planners who were hosting and represented at the conference. At Amberg Engineering, we are proud to contribute expertise and ideas that help shape the cities of tomorrow and contribute to organisations like International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) to further disseminate our knowhow. Thanks to principal author and presenter Chrysothemis Paraskevopoulou from National Technical University of Athens for this successful collaboration. #UndergroundSpace #SustainableCities #UrbanPlanning #ResilientCities #Innovation
